What is the most important thing I should know about Caverta?

• Do not take Caverta if you are taking nitrates for chest pain or heart problems. These include nitroglycerin (Nitrostat, Nitrolingual, Nitro-Dur, Nitro-Bid, others), isosorbide dinitrate (Dilatrate-SR, Isordril, Sorbitrate), and isosorbide mononitrate (Imdur, ISMO, Monoket). Taking Caverta together with a nitrate can cause serious problems with blood pressure.
• If you experience dizziness or nausea, or pain, numbness, or tingling in your chest, arms, neck, or jaw during sexual activity, stop taking the medication and consult your doctor immediately.
• Do not take Caverta more than once a day. Be sure to leave 24 hours between doses.
• If you have an erection that is painful or lasts more than 4 hours, seek immediate medical attention. This could be priapism, which can cause permanent damage to the penis.
• Sudden vision loss: A small number of patients have experienced sudden vision loss while taking Caverta. If this occurs, stop taking it and seek immediate medical help.

What is Caverta?

Caverta is a medication that relaxes muscles and increases blood flow to specific areas of the body. It is indicated for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (impotence) in men.

Another name under which it is marketed is Revatio, which is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension and improve exercise capacity in men and women.

Caverta may also be used for other purposes as directed by your doctor.

What should I discuss with my doctor before taking Caverta?

• Do not take Caverta if you are taking nitrates.
• Tell your doctor if you have a history of heart disease, heart failure, high or low blood pressure, or eye problems.
• Liver or kidney disease, blood disorders such as sickle cell anemia, multiple myeloma, or leukemia, and if you have been diagnosed with penile dysfunction or stomach ulcers.
• If you have a history of priapism or have been advised not to have sex for medical reasons.
• Caverta should not affect unborn children, but consult your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
• It is not known whether Caverta passes into breast milk, so you should consult your doctor before taking it if you are breastfeeding.

How should I take Caverta?

• Take Caverta as directed by your doctor. Do not take larger doses or for longer than recommended.
• Revatio is usually taken 3 times a day, with an interval of 4 to 6 hours between each dose.
• Caverta (Viagra) is usually taken 30 minutes to 1 hour before sexual activity. It can be taken up to 4 hours befores. Do not take it more than once a day.
• Remember: Caverta improves erections only during sexual stimulation. An erection doesn’t occur automatically just by taking the medication.

What happens if I forget to take a dose?

Caverta is taken as needed, so you never miss a dose. If you take Revatio and miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose.

What happens in case of an overdose?

If you think you have overdosed, seek immediate medical attention. Overdose symptoms include chest pain, nausea, irregular heartbeat, or feeling dizzy or faint.

What should I avoid while taking Caverta?

• Avoid alcohol consumption, as this may increase the side effects of Caverta.
• Do not take other impotence medications, such as alprostadil (Caverject, Muse, Edex) or yohimbine (Yocon, Yodoxin), without consulting your doctor.

What are the possible side effects of Caverta?

Serious effects:

• Sudden loss of vision.
• Chest pain or severe pain radiating to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, general malaise.
• Irregular heartbeats.
• Shortness of breath.
• Painful erection or one that lasts more than 4 hours (priapism).

Minor effects:

• Redness of the face, neck, or chest.
• Nasal congestion.
• Headache.
• Stomach upset or back pain.

If you experience side effects that are unusual or bothersome, consult your doctor.

What medications can interact with Caverta?

Do not take Caverta if you are taking nitrates. Also, tell your doctor if you are taking:

• Bosentan (Tracleer)
• Cimetidine (Tagamet)
• Antibiotics such as Erythromycin or Clarithromycin
• HIV medications
• Antifungal medications such as Itraconazole or Ketoconazole
• Carbamazepine, Phenobarbital or Phenytoin
• Rifampin or Rifabutin
