What is Allegra?

• Allegra is an antihistamine. Antihistamines block the actions of natural chemicals in the body known as histamine.
• Allegra is used to prevent sneezing, nasal congestion, itchy and watery eyes, and other symptoms related to allergic conditions.
• Allegra may also be used for other purposes listed in the medical guide.

What should I discuss with my doctor before taking Allegra?

• Do not take Allegra if you have had an allergic reaction to this medicine.
• Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have had any serious heart, liver, or kidney disease. You may need to lower your dose or receive special monitoring during treatment.
• Allegra is in FDA pregnancy category C: This means it has not been shown to cause birth defects in unborn children. Do not take this medicine without first consulting your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment.
• Allegra has also not been shown to be passed through breast milk. Do not take this medication without first consulting your doctor if you are breastfeeding your baby.
• Allegra is not approved for use in children under 6 years of age.

How should I take Allegra?

• Take Allegra exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you do not understand the instructions, contact your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor for clarification.
• Take each dose with a full glass of water.
• Allegra is usually taken twice a day, in the morning and at night. Follow your doctor’s instructions.
• Do not take Allegra shortly after taking an antacid containing aluminum or magnesium, such as Rolaids, Maalox, Milanta, Milk of Magnesia, Pepcid Complete, and others. These antacids may decrease the effectiveness of Allegra.
• Never take more than the recommended dose. If symptoms persist, contact your doctor.
• Store Allegra at room temperature, away from moisture and excessive heat.

What happens if I forget to take a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip that dose and take the next one at the scheduled time. DO NOT DOUBLE THE DOSE of this medicine.
